As much as I adore my jacquard high waisted skirts, organza tops, & linen shirts, the simplicity and humbleness of the Indian weaves & prints resonate in my fashion mind. Indian handlooms are representatives of precious heritage and craftsmanship. Each region in India takes pride in its quintessential cultural identities and ancestral artisanship passed through generations.
From ikat to kalamkari, from chikankari to bandej, Indian prints are inspired from nature, architecture of temples and forts, rural life and geometric patterns, rich vibrant colours and speak a thousand words to the beholder.
My personal favourites are ikat & kalamkari owing to their versatility of being a perfect Indo-Western element. i remember picking up kalamkari skirts back in my graduation days and stacking silver oxidised bangles for that perfect ensemble. However, I have been quite a novice with ajrak prints. This primarily blue & red hand block printing style paved its way to my wardrobe very recently, and I am glad it did !!
Ajrakh printing celebrates nature amazingly. This is evident in the aesthetics of the unification of its colours as well as motifs. The traditional colours found in ajrakh printing are deep, which symbolise nature. Crimson red symbolizes the earth, and indigo blue symbolises twilight. Black and white are used with a view to outline motifs and define symmetrical designs.
I picked up a crimson coloured ajrak dupatta from Desi Sass (an instagram store; launching their website very soon) that houses a plethora of Indian weaves & fabrics. This exuberant print was an instant connection and was I couldn’t to style it my way.
In this post, I have tried to work this number in 2 ways.
Look 1- Keeping it Traditional
Paired this crimson beauty with a plain black dress & kohlapuri wedges
Look 2- Indo-Fusion Vibes
Wrapped a belt around to create a fusion ensemble
In today’s time when the world is swaying between modernity & minimalism, if you haven’t yet explored the Indian weaves & prints, I bet you’re missing out an ocean of fashion opportunities.
Until next time,
